Marital and Family Therapy

Category - Ongoing

Your informed consent document never included a section that defined what you would not be able to do for clients. A client is approaching you and is asking you to serve as a couples therapist for her and her husband, while continuing individual therapy with her only. Your response would be:
  1. Flattered; she thinks of you as good enough to conduct both kinds of therapy.
  2. Terminate the therapy based upon the awkwardness.
  3. To ask her to pick one or the other; it can’t be both.
  4. That it would call into question any ongoing treatment she might receive.
Explanation
Answer - D - While you may be able to see her in couples work, you may want to point out that because you have so far only seen her, it could be difficult to separate her own personal material from that which is “the couple’s” material. In fact, given what is discussed, it may throw into conflict the therapist’s obligation of confidentiality and could put the individual therapy at risk.
