Marital and Family Therapy

Category - Treatment

You are working with a client who presents with symptoms of paranoia, but does not present with issues surrounding hallucinations or delusions. As an Adlerian therapist, it is more difficult to deal with these clients because of the Adlerian definition of neuroses. Neurosis is defined as:
  1. Seeking to excuse oneself from what is required
  2. Contained only in delusions
  3. Contained only in hallucinations
  4. Complexity that cannot be understood by the therapist
Explanation
Answer - A - Neuroses, according to Adler, are attempts at seeking to excuse oneself from his or her obligations. There is no distinction as to which pieces are included or excluded. The therapist is given an understanding of the neuroses through the client’s presentation. While it seems to be a bit callous, Adler gives much personal attachment to disorders and sees them as serving a purpose specifically for the client, imagined or otherwise.
