Marital and Family Therapy

Category - Law & Ethics

You are practicing in a relatively rural part of northern Wisconsin, where there are a lot of dairy farms. At one point, a recession begins in the milk market. All of a sudden, the economy in the area is tough on everyone. One of your most faithful clients, who always comes early and pays on time, needs to pay you in butter, milk, cream, and cheese this week. How could you approach this?
  1. Accept cash, check, or credit card only
  2. This is the individual’s livelihood. The fact that they are sharing with you is meaningful.
  3. Decline to see the family until the debt is paid
  4. Do therapy at their home so that they can save the gas
Explanation
Answer - C - Some may consider this an ethical quandry. After all, if someone is able to give of their livelihood, it must be meaningful, and indicate that they are equipped in other ways besides financial. On the other hand, you want to be careful of the precedent that you set, especially in difficult times, so that others don’t necessarily get the wrong idea. Doing therapy in the client’s home may be a personal boundary issue that brings you further into the issue. Safety says wait until the debt is paid.
