EMT Practice Test

Category - EMT-Basic

You are aiding a patient that has been stabbed in the leg. The wound is very deep and the cut is very long. You have applied pressure to help control the excessive amount of bleeding, but this is helping little. What should you do next to help control the bleeding?
  1. Apply a tourniquet
  2. Apply a Sphygmomanometer
  3. Splint the leg
  4. Add more pressure
Explanation
Answer: C - To help control bleeding in the leg when applying pressure does little to help, splint the leg. Splinting the leg prevents movement of sharp bone fragments that could lacerate other vessels and promulgate any bleeding. Also, the bones contain vessels that must be stabilized so as to allow proper clotting mechanisms to take effect.

Michael McCarthy says:

Shouldn't applying tourniquet to control bleeding then splint once bleeding is controlled?

Joseph Philip says:

I don't necessarily agree with this answer, I believe it should be tourniquet, controlling the bleeding is the priority and the tourniquet will control it the best.
