You are a provider working in an emergency room and just took over several patients. Upon review of laboratory results, you notice that under urinalysis, it states that one of the patient’s urine samples has a dark amber color. What would you think?
  1. This is a normal color.
  2. The laboratory made a mistake.
  3. The person might be having liver problems.
  4. None of the above
Explanation
Answer - C - A basic urinalysis is a very standard test used to screen for many different ailments. Color can indicate there might be a problem and t can be a clue to help fit the whole diagnostic picture. A dark amber colored urine sample could mean the presence of bilirubin and since bilirubin is manufactured in the liver and is not a normal constituent of urine, this could indicate a problem. This finding is not diagnostic and should be reviewed with other pertinent clinical data in order to diagnose and treat the patient.
