David had been the U.S. Secretary of War under Franklin Pierce from 1853-1857. Before and after his tenure as the Secretary of War, Davis was a U.S. Senator from Mississippi. As a senator he actually argued against secession, and he was reluctant to serve as the Confederate president, but ultimately accepted the post. Following the war, he was imprisoned for two years and charged with treason, but the charges were later dropped. He was released after two years.
