EKGs can detect abnormal functioning of specific portions of the heart based on the pattern of electrical impulses. A stress test uses an EKG to monitor the heart during “stress” or exercise to see if there are changes when the heart is forced to work harder. A nuclear stress test can be most beneficial, as it uses radioactive substances such as thallium which, when injected, can be viewed through radiology procedures and the actual blood flow becomes visible.
