While the average temperatures are climbing everywhere due to climate change, the prevalence of heat waves in Africa-prolonged periods of abnormally hot weather-has not changed. Only North America and Europe have experienced an increase in heat wave intensity and frequency. Intensifying heat in Latin America has made drought more common, leading to deforestation (replacement of tropical forest by savanna). Increased rainfall in North America has caused an increase in agricultural products by five to 20 percent in some areas. For the same reason, flash flooding is becoming more common in Europe.
