Answer: A - During the leadership of Samuel Gompers (from 1886-1924), the American Federation of Labor (AFL) was not an organization for skilled and unskilled laborers. It was only open to the craft unions populated by skilled workers. Gompers founded the prominent labor union and led them in their advocacy for a shorter workweek, higher wages, and safer working conditions. His work on behalf of the working class led to collective bargaining and contract practices that are still used today. Thirty-one years after Gompers’ death, the AFL merged with its rival union, the Congress of Industrial Organization (CIO), to become the AFL-CIO, which has since become the longest-lasting labor union in U.S. history.
