Answer: A - Smallpox was transmitted via the Columbian Exchange, but the strain that the explorers carried originated in Europe. The explorers introduced it to the Americas during the Age of Exploration and it decimated the Native American population. When outbreaks occurred among the tribes, it was not uncommon for 80 to 90 percent of the tribe to be wiped out by the disease. Nevertheless, the Columbian Exchange resulted in mind-boggling shifts in agricultural and economic output of almost every participating civilization. Many of the crops for which various nations became known in the modern world were not native to those regions and arrived via the Columbian Exchange. For example, sugar cane arrived in the Caribbean from Asia; potatoes were transmitted to Europe from the New World; tomatoes didn’t exist in Italy until the Columbia Exchange; Columbia did not have coffee yet; and Florida did not have oranges.
