Answer: D - When Massachusetts farmer Daniel Shays led a rebellion against the government because of a post-revolutionary economic crisis, the leaders of states decided to revise, if not rewrite, the Articles of Confederation. Shays, like many farmers, had borrowed money to increase his acreage during the American Revolution due to the increased demand for crops. However, when the war ended and the army disbanded, his market disappeared. He and other farmers were jailed for their failure to pay their mortgages. Without a central government to facilitate trade and manage banking, the farmers were without recourse and rebelled, illustrating the weakness of the Articles of Confederation.
