Hyperthyroidism is caused by an increase in thyroid hormone due to thyroid tumors. The condition is also caused by autoimmune stimulation of thyroid cells, pituitary adenomas, and hyperplastic thyroid tissue. Signs and symptoms include thyroid enlargement, eye protrusion, and increased metabolic rate. Treatment includes radioactive iodine, methimazole, thyroidectomy, and radioactive iodine.
