There will come a time when you either have to deliver a baby or work on a pediatric patient. It is important to properly define what age group your patient is in. How old is a newborn?
  1. Birth to 1 month
  2. Birth to 6 weeks
  3. Birth to 2 months
  4. Birth to 10 weeks
Explanation
Answer: A - A newborn is in the birth to 1 month age group. It is important to know the characteristics of a newborn. There is minimal stranger anxiety; however, there can be separation anxiety from parents. Newborns may not like the feeling of suffocation by an oxygen mask; if they aren’t showing signs of distress, you might try “blow by” oxygen, holding the mask a short distance from the face. However, if the newborn is hypoxic, cyanotic, listless, or bradycardic, do not hesitate to ventilate the patient. Assess breathing from a distance - watch chest rise, note color and level of activity. Always keep a newborn warm.
