Answer: B - Gibbons v. Ogden determined that the Commerce Clause of the Constitution gave Congress the right to regulate interstate trade. Prior to this, it had been largely regulated by the states. However, when a conflict arose between Thomas Gibbons and Aaron Ogden over water rights in New York State, the court ruled that states lacked the power to generate monopolies on waterway and upheld federal control of interstate commerce. This also marks a significant step toward the supremacy of the federal government over the state.
