The Babinski reflex is a primitive reflex that is tested in newborns and infants to test for diseases of the spinal cord and brain. When the infant has normal spinal cord and brain functioning, the toes will fan out. As the infant grows to 12 or 18 months, the response will be an inward curl of the toes.
