In 1819, corporations became distinct entities from the individuals managing them, marking the first step toward corporate "personhood." As corporations moved away from government charters and became independent entities, the government had to further refine their function and privileges. In the name of helping American businesses grow, these refinements generally supported the corporation over the individual.
