Marital and Family Therapy

Category - Practice

Structural therapists are always interested in how feedback develops. In order to help a family determine if they are receiving feedback from one another, a therapist might:
  1. Ask the family to begin making requests of one another
  2. Only respond using the terms “please” and “thank you”
  3. Begin to watch the children for greedy behaviors
  4. Encourage the parents to do favors for one another
Explanation
Answer - A - Depending upon how requests are handled or answered, the therapist will have an idea of how the family is able to communicate with one another outside of the therapy session. Repeating please and thank you, while a great form of modeling, may not receive the necessary attention to generate feedback that pure observation would.
