Marital and Family Therapy

Category - Practice

Some may argue that trust is the cornerstone of any therapeutic relationship. However, others may argue that therapeutic relationships grow out of a common knowledge of a set of circumstances. The danger of this point of view is:
  1. Knowledge is not the only thing upon which to build our experiences
  2. No danger; people know how to put those feelings aside
  3. Being of the same mindset means that there’s no room for the friction needed in therapy
  4. A therapist with similar views may not challenge you as much
Explanation
Answer - A - If two people are of the same mindset around a particular issue, it may be difficult to build up to a point where the client feels challenged, but it’s certainly not impossible. On the other hand, knowledge is not the only thing that builds our experiences. There are emotions that must be considered, as well as cultural and other factors that contribute to the knowledge that forms the experience. The knowledge does not sit in a vacuum alone.
