In order for cultural diffusion to occur there must be a mutually beneficial relationship between two (or more) parties from different cultures. Trade relationships are often long-term as well, providing a context in which members of different cultures can repeatedly engage in cultural exchange. War is not mutually beneficial (technically), even when war generates eventual benefits. Education typically involves the dissemination of knowledge within the same culture.
