Answer A - The Dixiecrats, a Southern offshoot of the Democratic Party, replaced the Democrats on the ballots in four states during the 1948 federal election. The Dixiecrats were Southern segregationists who felt the Democrats were becoming too progressive in terms of racial integration, which caused them to form their own party. They managed to replace their former party altogether on the ballots in South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana, but they had to run as a third party everywhere else. The Dixiecrats ran Strom Thurmond as their presidential candidate, winning over 1.1 million votes.
