Answer: E - Henry Clay sought to create a self-sufficient American economy with his American System. He proposed that Southern cotton should fuel Northern factories instead of the British and that the industrial goods created should then be shipped to the West. He also favored the development of infrastructure, such as roads and canals, to support this reorganized trade. His plan embodied the nationalism that characterized the era, although it was ultimately defeated because the North and South were not yet ready to fully commit to a national agenda.
