Marital and Family Therapy

Category - Law & Ethics

During one of your sessions, a client begins asking about a certain medication that she has heard about that could be effective for her. Ethically, in order to stay within your scope of practice, you are able to discuss:
  1. Nothing about medication; refer her to her MD.
  2. The importance of medication compliance for what has already been prescribed
  3. How much medication she has been taking on a regular basis
  4. What medications would be right for the client
Explanation
Answer - B - You are always able to discuss the importance of adhering to prescription medication, even if it was obtained from other providers. For many in psychotherapy, a change in medication could result in mood swings or behavior for which they are unprepared. As for how much medication and which would be more appropriate, that all falls to the psychiatrist.
