Decreased vision or blindness in half the visual field of one or both eyes is known as hemianopia. A variation of the confrontation test can be used to determine whether a patient is afflicted with this condition. The examiner places fingers in two quadrants on opposing sides of the vertical midline at the same time. The patient is then asked to count the total number of fingers seen. If the patient can only visualize fingers on one side of the vertical midline, hemianopic vision loss on the other side should be suspected.
