Marital and Family Therapy

Category - Law & Ethics

As a Marriage and Family Therapist, one may assist clients in interpreting results from psychoeducational exams only if:
  1. One has been appropriately trained in the purpose, use, and interpretation of the exam
  2. One has been subjected to the exams previously
  3. There are reasons to believe the tests were necessary
  4. There are no other professionals available to provide the service
Explanation
Answer - A - For the most part, clinical psychologists reserve the right to administer and interpret certain psychological exams. However, if a marriage and family therapist has received training and the test applies specifically to MFT practice, MFTs are allowed to use them. For example, the BAI, BDI, and Achenbach (ADHD) all fall under the category of basic measurements for which MFTs can interpret and provide data.
