All of the guidelines listed below should be used when applying a cervical collar to a seated patient except one. Which guideline is incorrect?
  1. Manually stabilize the patient’s head while your partner selects a collar
  2. Select a collar that is the correct size based on the patient’s size and manufacturer’s guidelines
  3. Make sure the collar completely covers the patient’s earlobes and extend well beyond the chin
  4. Secure the collar by overlapping the Velcro at the side of the patient’s neck
  5. Ensure that the collar fits snuggly on all sides but is not too tight or too loose
Explanation
Answer - C - The correct fit for a cervical collar should align closely with the bottom of the patient’s earlobes. It should not rise too far above (cover the earlobes) or too far below (leaving significant space between the top of the collar and the earlobes). The chin should fit within the saddle of the collar and be well supported by the collar. However, the collar should not extend too far beyond the chin.
