All of the following apply to the care of an avulsion except one. Which of the following does not apply to the care of an avulsion?
  1. Gently clean the wound site of debris with water
  2. Gently place the skin back in its original position
  3. Control bleeding
  4. Administer oxygen as per local protocols
  5. Provide care for shock
Explanation
Answer: A - All of the statements above apply to the care of an avulsion except the wound should not be cleaned with water. If adhesive tape does not stick due to blood or sweat from the patient, use cravats made from triangular bandages that are at least two inches wide. The same basic steps apply to treating an amputation. In both cases, try to preserve the avulsed or amputated part. This can be done by wrapping the part in a moistened, sterile dressing and placing it in a plastic bag or plastic wrap. Keep it cool, but not frozen. Try to label the bag with the patient’s name and make sure it is transported with the patient to the medical facility.
