The laryngoscope is inserted into the patient’s airway, and so is contaminated with bodily fluids and requires sterilization by heat, steam, or radiation to ensure all microorganisms are destroyed. A bleach solution does not provide sterilization for items that come into contact with bodily fluids. However a bleach solution would be appropriate to decontaminate a traction splint, since it is appropriate for items contaminated only by skin contact.
