A mother and daughter were referred to your clinic for a psychological consultation and this was to be your first meeting with the two of them. They show up for their 45-minute appointment 30 minutes late. What do you do about it?
  1. Explain that 15 minutes is nowhere near enough time to cover everything you need to and therefore the appointment will have to be rescheduled.
  2. Don’t give them a full session, but, assuming they have a legitimate reason for their lateness, let the session run 15 minutes past the regular ending time. That way, if the next client has to wait, it will only be a short wait.
  3. Tell them that you have another client coming immediately after them. But if they want to wait around they can have the session afterwards and be your last appointment of the day.
  4. Since they were late, meet with them for an abbreviated appointment of 15 minutes and make it clear that for their next appointment, they need to be on time.
Explanation
Answer: D - The therapist should meet with the mother and daughter for 15 minutes since that is all that remains of their scheduled appointment. It is not fair to the next client to be kept waiting because of a previous client’s tardiness. Also, therapists should not be changing their schedule around to accommodate clients who are late. But if the therapist makes them wait a whole hour to be seen, or refuses to see them at all, they may never come back.
