A culturally competent counselor has awareness about his or her own racist views, beliefs, and/ or attitudes, and how this has impacted them personally, and vocationally. This can be especially important for Caucasian counselors. Why?
  1. To recognize how they have directly (or indirectly) gained from the racism of others
  2. To create a feeling of remorse, and encourage them to apologize to the client
  3. To enable them to talk to their client about the advantages they gained from this racism
  4. All of the above
Explanation
Answer: A - Culturally competent clinicians have a wealth of knowledge about oppression, racism, and stereotypes of all groups. This allows for self-reflection about personal biases, and racist views. And although it applies to all groups, it is often especially pertinent for White counselors to examine these views, so they are able to recognize how they may have advanced in their lives due to this racism (White identity).
