The National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCAP) Physician Assistant Recertifying Exam (PANRE) is a computer based exam for those in their fifth or sixth year in their certification process. The exam consists of 240 multiple choice questions, and takes four hours. There are four blocks of time each consisting of 60 minutes, with a total of 45 minutes allotted between blocks for breaks.
 
The PANRE exam tests general knowledge; however, 40% of the test may be concentrated on general knowledge focusing on one of the following three areas:
  • Adult medicine
  • Surgery
  • Primary care

Earning a passing grade on the PANRE exam grants the test taker PANRE certification.
