The Foreign Service Officer Test is required for all aspiring diplomats and covers a broad array of cultural, political, geographical, economic, and communications questions. This module contains a 230 multiple choice questions and detailed and explanatory answers.
The Foreign Service Officer Test (FSOT) is administered by the U.S. Department of State. FSOT test-takers are interested in careers abroad at U.S. embassies, consulates, and other facilities, Foreign service officers carry out U.S. foreign policy and aid U.S. citizens abroad.
There are three multiple-choice sections of around 60 questions each and one essay. Applicants must display knowledge of the FSO position, history of the U.S., and English grammar, as well as the following general knowledge areas:
Applicants are given 45 minutes to complete each section. Test takers must obtain a minimum combined score of 154 on the multiple-choice section and a 6 out of 12 on the essay.
Applicants can register for the exam during the three annual testing windows, and those taking it must be U.S. citizens over the age of 20. Applicants may take the test as many times as they choose, but must wait a calendar year before a retest. It is offered only in computerized form.
