California Basic Educational Skills Test™ (CBEST®) Practice Exam
Test takers should approach the CBEST as a computer-based test administered at a exam center as California phases out the paper-based test. The CBEST exam is three separate sections.
The CBEST consists of 3 sections - you will need to pass all 3 for success:
Computer-based test (CBT) and online-proctored test:
Reading Section: 50 multiple-choice questions, 90 minutes
Mathematics Section: 50 multiple-choice questions, 2 hours
Writing Section: 2 essays, 90 minutes
The CBEST has historically been available in two forms:
An online-proctored test, in which you may test remotely (e.g., from home, workplace).
The paper-based test was administered at a test center. You may take one, two, or all three sections at a single administration.
Please note that at its April 2021 meeting, the Commission on Teacher Credentialing took action to retire the paper-based option for CBEST pending updates to the California Code of Regulations. Therefore, the 2021–2022 CBEST paper-based test dates are tentative and are subject to cancellation. Accordingly, from now on, you should prepare for an online exam.
Test results are available within two weeks of testing.
