The California Basic Education Skills Test (CBEST) is administered to residents of California and Oregon who are seeking employment in public schools. CBEST tests the applicant\'s grasp of basic reading, writing, and mathematics skills that are needed to acquire and maintain a teaching position. The test is administered by the National Evaluation Systems, Inc., and can be taken on a number of set dates throughout the year. It is a computerized exam.
Applicants are given 4 hours to complete the exam, which is broken up into three sections: 50 multiple-choice questions in the reading section, 50 multiple-choice questions in the math section, and two essay questions in the writing section. Applicants may take the test as many times as they want or until they pass. Applicants must receive at least a 123 combined score to pass.
