The Advanced Placement English Literature & Composition exam is administered by the College Board each May to high school students. Students are to demonstrate an elevated proficiency with works of literary merit, including classic and contemporary works. The College Board releases a list of recommended reading each year which features novels, poetry, and plays. The exam is graded on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest. Higher institutions can grant college credit based on a student\\\'s score at their discretion. 

Students have  three hours to complete the two sections on the exam. Section I is an hour long and is inclusive of 55 multiple choice questions which test students on the form and content of various passages. Section II is two hours long, and students must write two analytical essays on excerpts from literary works.
