The GED exam consists of five subject area exams, covering a broad range of general knowledge determined to be equivalent to the education level of a high school degree in the US:

Mathematics, with 40 multiple-choice questions and 10 numerical or coordinate answer questions, which the test taker has a total of 90 minutes to complete. The test taker is provided formulas and a basic calculator.

Language Arts: Writing, with 50 multiple choice questions and an essay question. The test taker has 75 minutes for the multiple choice section and 45 minutes for the essay.

Language Arts: Reading, with 40 questions on two passages, with 65-minutes to complete them

Social Studies, with 50 multiple choice questions and 70 minutes to complete them.

Science, with 50 multiple choice questions and 80 minutes to complete them.
