The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is administered by the Educational Testing Service to college graduates who wish to obtain their Master's or Ph. D. The Reading Comprehension section of the exam gauges the student's ability to understand passages and answer questions on the theme, tone, and style of the text. The GRE is offered frequently throughout the week, depending on the test taker's nearest testing center, and is available in paper or computer form.

There are approximately 10 passages on the Reading Comprehension section with corresponding multiple-choice questions. The number of questions that pertain to each passage can vary depending on the length and depth of the text. Applicants are given 3 hours and 45 minutes to complete the entire GRE, but it is recommended that they allot no more than 1 hour 30 minutes to the Reading Comprehension section.
